Born in Hungary, she was only eight when she contracted polio at an orphanage, after attempting to escape unsuccessfully from communist Hungary with her mother. What followed was a long and determined journey of recovery, resilience, and advocacy \u2014 one that continues to inspire.  <\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"658\" data-end=\"684\"><strong data-start=\"661\" data-end=\"684\">A Journey of Recovery<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"686\" data-end=\"1058\">After her diagnosis, Zsuzsanna spent months in recovery and rehabilitation. \u201cWith my mother\u2019s help, I was able to stand after about a year,\u201d she recalls. \u201cI started walking with crutches, then gradually moved to one stick.\u201d Over the years, she underwent operations on each foot and eventually made her way to England during the Hungarian revolution.   <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1060\" data-end=\"1386\">Her early determination defined her path \u2014 from learning to walk again to pursuing a career as a science teacher and later a chiropodist, writing books about her family\u2019s history, and developing a deep passion for languages and genealogy. Today, she stays active, is learning Italian, and loves to travel.  <\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"1393\" data-end=\"1433\"><strong data-start=\"1396\" data-end=\"1433\"><span>Living with Post-Polio Syndrome<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"1435\" data-end=\"1944\">Like many polio survivors, Zsuzsanna later developed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spierfonds.nl\/spierziekten\/postpoliosyndroom\">post-polio syndrome (PPS)<\/a>, a condition that can cause new muscle weakness, fatigue, and balance difficulties decades after the original illness. \u201cPost-polio can be very tricky,\u201d she explains. \u201cA lot of doctors try to be helpful, but they don\u2019t always realise it\u2019s a genuine condition. It can take a long time to get the right diagnosis \u2014 sometimes people are told it\u2019s just arthritis or old age.\u201d  <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1946\" data-end=\"2504\">For Zsuzsanna, getting the right support required persistence. After seeing an Ambroise advertisement in the British Polio Fellowship magazine, she brought it to her doctor\u2019s attention. \u201cIt took two years before I could get approval for braces on both legs,\u201d she says. \u201cI was lucky that I could travel to the Netherlands and have them made. Many people can\u2019t do that. Often, if the waiting time is too long, they stop walking altogether. Having braces means I can still get on my feet and move.\u201d   <\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"2511\" data-end=\"2547\"><strong data-start=\"2514\" data-end=\"2547\">Her Experience with the UTX Braces<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"2549\" data-end=\"2710\">Zsuzsanna wears two UTX SWING braces from Ambroise, one on each leg, which help her stay mobile and independent. Her orthopaedic specialist explains: <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2712\" data-end=\"3034\">\u201cZsuzsanna has reduced quadriceps control, knee hyperextension and valgus \u2014 more pronounced on the left side. The UTX SWING braces provide stability and help prevent excessive hyperextension. Over time, we\u2019ve made small adjustments to find the right balance between stability and comfort.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3036\" data-end=\"3354\">The UTX braces are lightweight, dynamic knee-ankle-foot orthoses (KAFOs) designed to assist with walking while allowing natural movement of the knee. In Zsuzsanna\u2019s case, they help control her knee alignment and give her the confidence to walk safely despite weakened muscles. <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3356\" data-end=\"3554\">\u201cWith post-polio, balance is everything,\u201d she says. \u201cIt takes precise work to get the braces adjusted just right. As I\u2019ve grown older, it\u2019s become more difficult, but they still make all the difference.\u201d <\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"3561\" data-end=\"3598\"><strong data-start=\"3564\" data-end=\"3598\">Staying Active and Curious<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"3600\" data-end=\"3915\">Despite her challenges, Zsuzsanna remains active and curious. She enjoys studying languages, delving into history, and planning travels.
